In an interview with News Central TV, Achonu said he won’t go to his home state of Imo if the state government were to have full control over all police forces within the state.
Achonu advocated for a multi-layered policing system. He said local government police should exist alongside state police, which would operate at the state level, while federal police would continue to operate at the national level. He cited the United States as an example, where the FBI, state police, and sheriffs coexist.
In Achonu’s words: “State police? Fine. But you must have local government police. This forest guards that the president introduced will work with local government vigilantes and other security agencies in every local government. Then state police will have their own level of police in the state, federal will have their own level like you have FBI, State Police and Sheriffs in US. That is the only way it can work, if not, I won’t go to Imo State again if the government is controlling both the police and the criminals”
