Peter Obi To Chair Imo LP Steering Committee

Presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, Sir Peter Gregory Obi, has accepted to be the Chairman of the party’s Interim Steering Committee in Imo State.

It would be recalled that following the dissolution of the Dr. Ambrose Onyekwere-led Caretaker Committee whose tenure expired in May, 2022, and the appointment of the Comr. Festus Bethel Iyke Onyekwulisi-led Caretaker Committee on March 6, 2023, which was challenged at the Federal High Court, Owerri last week, the National Working Committee held an emergency meeting in Abuja recently, aimed at an amicable resolution of the matter.

It was  gathered that in order for peace to reign, the Onyekwulisi-led Caretaker Committee was also dissolved, making way for an interim Steering Committee to pilot the affairs of the party.

It was further gathered that the 17-man Steering Committee also has as members, the three candidates of the party who won the National Assembly polls held on Saturday, February .

The trio are Sen. Francis Onyewuchi Ezenwa (Imo East), House of Representatives Members-elect, Dr. Mathew Nwogu (Aboh Mbaise/Ngor Okpala Federal Constituency) and

Sir Tochi Okere  (Owerri Municipal/Owerri North/Owerri West Federal Constituency).

The remaining 13 members are nominees of the 13 governorship aspirants of the party.

The Committee is expected to guide the party through the membership validation exercise which will end on April 5, election of three delegates from each of the 305 wards in the state (915) billed for April 7, and governorship primaries slated for April 10 which must be concluded not later than April 15 as the deadline for submission of the names of  candidates to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC is April 17.

It is also  revealed that  Nine of the thirteen  Governorship Aspirants are from Owerri Senatorial District (Imo East) three  from Okigwe Senatorial District (Imo North), while Orlu Senatorial District (Imo West) where incumbent governor, Sen. Hope Uzodinma comes from, has only one Aspirant.

The governorship election in the state is scheduled for November 11, along with that of Bayelsa and Kogi states.
