Sequel to some contentious issues the Imo State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has parted ways with the Imo Football Association(FA).
In a Press release jointly signed by the State Chairman, Mr Cosmos Chukwuemeka and the Secretary Mr Tunde Liadi, the Association said the release was to notify the general public, football stakeholders and the broader sports community of its decision which includes suspension of coverages and participation in the activities of the Imo State Football Association (FA) under the leadership of Barr. Ifeanyi Dike with immediate effect.
The Press release was a prompt response to an earlier one issued by the Barr Dike-led Imo FA.
According to the release, the decision though difficult, was as a result of series of unresolved misunderstandings and actions that have created a strained relationship between the association and members of the sports media community in the state.
The release quotes Barr Dike as having to told Imo SWAN Chairman, Mr. Cosmos Chukwuemeka, “that the Imo FA had decided to end its media partnership with SWAN, which includes the association’s use of the FA office space for its monthly congress meetings”.
Since this soured relationship, the Imo FA had matched its words with action to the point that during the NPFL fixture between Heartland FC and Kano Pillars, some Imo SWAN members were denied access to designated press areas at the Dan Anyiam Stadium. This unfortunate situation led to a tense atmosphere which unnecessarily hindered the Sportswriters from carrying out their professional duties.
The release observed that certain public remarks made by the FA Chairman during and after the said match day were disrespectful to her members.
The release also cited an incident at a function at Ngor Okpala during which the FA Chairman reportedly made a comment wherein a SWAN member Mr Anthony Ahize was personally threatened. Granted that the altercation may have arisen from heightened emotions, such exchanges could have been handled with caution and mutual respect, especially among professionals committed to sports development.
The release restated Imo SWAN’s commitment to promoting sports and football development in the state and advises that mutual respect and open communication between stakeholders are essential.
While reaffirming its commitment to professionalism, fair reporting and growth of football in the state, Imo SWAN insists that her objective remains to work in unity with all sports institutions and leadership, foster progress through collaboration and sustain accountability.
