Ex-Speaker Nwagwu Writes Imo Assembly, Demands Drug Test For Guber, Assembly Members

A former speaker of the Imo House of Assembly, Rt Hon Kelechi Kennedy Nwagwu has written the current leadership of that Assembly to make a law that will mandate candidates seeking the governorship position of the state as well as state House of Assembly members to undergo a compulsory drug test.

In a letter addressed to the Speaker, Imo House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Chike OLemgbe dated July 25, 2023, and made available to Nigeria Newspoint, the former Imo Assembly Speaker urged the state legislature to, among other things, consider making the law retropective in nature such that all those who participated in the recent primaries to run for the office of the governor including  the sitting Imo House of Assembly members, would be made to undergo the compulsory drug test.

Ex-Speaker Nwagwu who  ran in the Labour Party governorship primary, noted that although the constitution is clear on grounds upon which a candidate could be disqualified,  leaving the governance of Imo in the hands of drug addicts would portend dire consequences for the state.

He further opined that the drug test would be a guide for Imo citizens, and mentoring for the youths against drug abuse.
