The Imo Police Command has charged a Lawyer and staff of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, one Samuel Ugwuegbulam and two others said to be his siblings, to an Owerri Magistrate Court over alleged assault on Engr Nlem Kelechi right inside an office at the Imo Police Headquarters ,Owerri.
This is even as the 1st defendant in the said matter, Samuel Ugwuegbulam, is said to have not appeared in court yet.
The said EFCC staff, Ugwuegbulam and the two others are facing six-count charges bothering on assault, conspiracy, malicious damage of police property, and Engr Nlem’s personal belongings, among other charges.
It was learnt that the Imo Police Command had invited the EFCC staff, Ugwuegbulam , and the two other defendants, Meziri Precious and Okere Obinna, said to be his siblings, for an interview at Scorpion Unit of the Police command over a land case with Engr Nlem.
Nigeria Newspoint gathered that the police officers were surprised when the defendants, Ugwuegbulam , Meziri and Okere allegedly pounced on Engr Nlem as soon as he came into the office and physically assaulted him in the full glare of the police officers handling the case.
The matter with Charge No: OW/61c/2026, between Commissioner of Police as complainant, and Ugwuegbulam Samuel Esq., Meziri Precious and Okere Obinna as defendants, read in part:
“That you Ugwuegbulam Samuel Esq ‘m,’ Meziri Precious ‘m,’ and Okere Obinna ‘m,’ on the 14th day of November, 2025, at Scorpion Unit office, State Police Headquarters, Owerri, in Owerri Magisterial District, conspired amongst yourselves to commit an offense to wit: Assault occasioning harm, on one Hon Engr Nlem Kelechi and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Code, Cap “C38,” Laws of the Nigeria 2004, as applicable to Imo State.
“Count II: That you Ugwuegbulam Samuel Esq ‘m,’ Meziri Precious ‘m,’ and Okere Obinna ‘m,’ on the same date, time and place within the same Magisterial District aforementioned, during an interview with SP Emmanuel Ejeje, the officer in-charge of Scorpion Unit, State Police Headquarters, Owerri, assaulted one Hon Engr Nlem Kelechi by given him fist blows all over his body, used office plastic chairs to hit him on his body and caused him harm and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap. “C38,” Law of the Nigeria 2004, as applicable in Imo State.
“COUNT III: That you Ugwuegbulam Samuel Esq. ‘m’, Meziri Precious ‘m’ and Okere Obinna ‘m’, on the 14” day of November, 2025 at Scorpion Unit office, State Pollce Headquarters, Owerri, in Owerri Magisterial District, in the process of assaulting Hon. Engr. Nlem Kelechi, damaged his Gold necklace chaln valued Seven Hundred Thousand Naira (N700,000.00) and his phone valued Five Hundred Thousand Naira (N500,000.00) and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap. “C38”, Laws of the Nigeria 2004, as applicable in Imo State.
COUNT IV: That you Ugwuegbulam Samuel Esq. ‘m’, Meziri Precious ‘m’ and Okere Obinna ‘m’, on the same date, time and place within the same Magisterial District aforementioned, assaulted Hon Engr. Nlem.
“”COUNT IV: That you Ugwuegbulam Samuel Esq. ‘m’, Meziri Precious ‘m’ and Okere Obinna ‘m’, on the same date, time and place within the same Maqisterial District aforementioned, while assaulting Hon Engr. Nlem Kelechi, willfully and maliciously damaged two plastic office chairs valued
N14,000.00, one green tick plastic office chair valued N15,000.00 and one standing office fan valued N35,000.00 in the office of officer-in-charge of the Scorpion Unit – SP Emmanuel Ejeje, property of the Nigeria Police Force and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 451 of the Criminal Code, Cap. “C38, Laws of the Nigeria 2004 as applicable in Imo State.
“COUNT V: That you Ugwuegbulam Samuel Esq. ‘m’, Meziri Precious ‘m and Okere Obinna ‘m’, on the same date, time and place within the same Magisterial District aforementioned, while assaulting Hon Engr. Nlem Kelechi, willfully and maliciously damaged Galaxy A31 phone valued N150,000.00, property of W/Inspr. Amarachi Mbachu and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 451 of the
Criminal Code, Cap. “C38″ Laws of the Nigeria 2004, as applicable in Imo State.,” among other charge.”
It was further gathered that the 1st defendant Ugwuegbulam , who works with the EFCC, was allegedly yet to appear in court despite the necessary court process served on him.
Meanwhile the matter has been adjourned to March 10, 2026 for further hearing.
