Onyewuchi Laments Prolonged ASUU Strike, Says Nigeria Students Suffering

The senator representing Imo East Senatorial District,(Owerri Zone), Sen. Ezenwa Onyewuchi has lamented the breakdown of negotiations between the Federal Government and ASUU, leading to the continued strike by the University Lecturers, saying it is an ill wind that blows no one any  good.

Sen. Onyewuchi stated this when a group of students from the senatorial zone paid him a courtesy visit at his Owerri residence.

The astute Lawmaker decried the damage the continued strike is causing on the psyche of the students as well as its negative effects on the education sector in general.

He further queried the sincerity of the Federal Government in the negotiations with ASUU which according to him has unnecessarily prolonged the strike and exposed the students to sundry societal vices.

“No country plays politics with the education of her citizens and I wonder why the Federal Government has allowed this strike to continue with the obvious danger to the education sector and the future of our children”,he quipped.

Sen. Onyewuchi urged the Federal Government to show more commitment towards resolving the lingering crisis as no amount of buck passing or highhandedness could bring the students back to school.

The Labour Party candidate in the 2023 Senate election told the students that education has remained a cardinal agenda of his representation because he understands the importance of education and its impacts in the society and could no longer be comfortable with the continued ASUU strike.

He informed the students that within his three years in the senate, he has succeeded in attracting over twenty educational facilities which include, classrooms blocks, Information Communication Technology, laboratories, administrative and staff offices and water boreholes, and pleaded with the students to use the period of the strike to engage themselves in other meaningful ventures as they await the resolution of the crisis.

In their speech earlier, the students through their spokesman, Comrade Michael Isiguzo thanked Sen. Onyewuchi for the warm reception and commended him on the quality of his representation in the Senate.

The Student leader  said the students decided to embark on the courtesy visit because of the confidence they repose in Sen. Onyewuchi and to register their displeasure over the inability of the Federal Government to resolve the seven months old strike.

Comr.Isiguzo insisted that the strike has exposed them to so many dangers and pleaded with Sen. Onyewuchi to take their feelings back to the Senate with the view to resolving the crisis while assuring him of the massive support of the students towards  his ambition and  Labour Party in general.
