A drive through many rural roads in Imo state will lend credence to the topic, especially, with the rainy season gradually setting in.
While the present administration in Imo has won accolades for its strides in the area of infrastructure, it is pertinent to state that efforts need to be directed towards giving facelift to rural roads across the 27 LGAs of the state.
It is quite factual that rural roads in the state lack drainage systems, thus, creating room for flooding and ponds accumulating on the roads. This makes movement between communities difficult for motorists, even pedestrians.
In some cases, the roads have either cut into two, or currently ravaged by erosion.
The situation not only leads to high cost of transportation in rural communities, but also impacts negatively on cost of food items usually coming from the rural communities.
Poor state of rural roads equally robs off on ease of doing business and may hinder effective administration, accessibility, economy even security of the communities.
Against this backdrop therefore ,we urge the present administration in the state to do more and up the ante in favour of rural roads now that the rains are apparently not yet heavy.
