Dr. Adegbenro explained that his grandfather was a philanthropist who employed many people, and he played a crucial role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) movement, fighting against the military regime of General Sani Abacha. The fight was not easy, and many, including political figures like Polar Ahmed Tunu, risked their lives to challenge the dictatorship. Today, the democracy Nigerians enjoy has roots in these brave actions, yet the younger generation often does not fully understand this history.
Beyond remembering the past, Dr. Adegbenro also addressed challenges facing Nigeria today. He criticised the culture of laziness among some youths, saying, “Our youths today are lazy. I’m sorry to say because they believe that everything is handed to them.” He emphasised the importance of personal effort and responsibility, reflecting on how rewards were earned through merit in his own upbringing.
He also addressed criticisms of current leadership. Some individuals have compared the running of the government to a WhatsApp group. Dr. Adegbenro responded firmly, calling such statements “stupid” and explained that social media criticism often comes from people who have lost favor in government and seek attention rather than being constructive.
He highlighted the importance of national pride and loyalty, particularly for Nigerians living abroad. He stated, “If you are a Nigerian, you will not look down on your country to get a cheap vote in your second country.” This serves as a reminder that while dual nationality is allowed, Nigerians should continue to work for the growth and recognition of their homeland.
