Alex Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives, has called on President Bola Tinubu to release Nnamdi Kanu, as reported by Daily Post on Thursday, 10th July, 2025.
Ikwechegh represents Aba North and Aba South Federal Constituency in Abia State.
He made the appeal in Umuahia during the launch of the Abia State Security Trust Fund.
He said the continued detention of Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was worsening insecurity in the South-East.
Ikwechegh said that many Nigerians, including people from the North, now support the call for Kanu’s release.
According to him, the move could help calm tensions and reduce unrest in the region.
He also spoke about the efforts of South-East lawmakers in pushing for Kanu’s freedom.
He said many people do not know how much work members of the South-East Caucus in the National Assembly have done behind the scenes.
Ikwechegh said the group, led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, has been engaging with top security officials.
He mentioned that meetings have been held with the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and other security committees in Abuja.
He stressed that people in the South-East feel left out of national affairs.
He described Kanu as a voice many people in the region listen to.
“Even our northern brothers are agitating that Nnamdi Kanu should be released,” Ikwechegh said.
