Micheal Ugorji’s Murder: Family, NGO insist on justice, task police on suspect Ugorji’s prosecution   …Say: Suspect will kill them, if released

The family of slain Mr Ubanna Henry Iroegbu of Mbamara Ikoro Umueleagwa Onicha in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, has called on the authorities of the Nigeria Police to ensure the prosecution of Mr Micheal Aguwa Ugorji from the same community over his alleged murder of the victim last December.
Joined in the call for the suspect, Ugorji’s prosecution was a non-governmental organization, Grooming Leadership Network, which said it was pushing for justice to be done.
Speaking to newsmen on the development Tuesday, in Owerri, Okey Anyanwu who introduced himself as an Executive Director at Grooming Leadership Network, disclosed that on December 28, 2021, the suspect, Ugorji, allegedly shot the deceased Iroegbu, said to be an agriculture engineer of about 38 years of age.

Narrating further, Anyanwu revealed that on the fateful day, a sister to the deceased, Ugomma Aguwa (Nee Iroegbu) was cooking when the suspect, Ugorji walk up to her and asked her to stop cooking at the particular spot in their family compound where she was doing the cooking.

He said the suspect allegedly boasted that if she continued cooking at that particular spot, he would shoot her and that nothing would happen, saying that it was at that point that the victim said to be a sister to Ugomma Aguwa allegedly came out to know what was the matter, only for the suspect, who had allegedly picked up his gun from his house, to open fire on the deceased.

Continuing, the executive director of Grooming Leadership Network noted that the suspect allegedly left his house and reported himself to the Ezinhitte/Ahiazu Police Division. He hinted that it was when community people on learning about the alleged shooting of Late Iroegbu, went to the said police division to report the matter, that the  Ezinihitte/Ahiazu police acknowledged that the suspect was in their custody.

Anyanwu said when the people of the community returned to inform the police that the victim who was being rushed to hospital, had finally died, the police allegedly told them that the suspect had escaped. He disclosed that Ezinihitte/Ahiazu Police Division later transferred the matter to State CID Owerri, where the suspect was detained.

He however, disclosed that it shocked them on learning that the suspect had allegedly returned to his base in Aba and resumed his business. He informed that it was at that point that they matter was taken to Police Zone 9 Umuahia who informed them that the matter was already reported to them.

Apparently dissatisfied with the response they got from Police Zone 9 Umuahia, Anyanwu hinted that the NGO and the deceased family reported the matter to the Inspector General of Police, IGP, who according to him, effected the arrest of the suspect, Ugorji.

He therefore, called on the police to ensure the prosecution of the suspect, Ugorji, adding that they were not interested in any negotiations or settlement outside the law.

Also speaking, the eldest uncle to the deceased, Bernard Iroegbu, told newsmen that the family demands nothing but full prosecution of the suspect, maintaining that the suspect had allegedly threaten to deal with anybody following up the matter.

Mr Edmund Aguwa who introduced himself as the eldest brother of the suspect, added that the police should do the right thing by ensuring that justice was done.
