Fuel hike: Imo Assembly summons DPR, threatens showdown

By Ebenezer Ojor:

The unabating high cost of petroleum products in Imo State in particular has drawn the ire of Imo lawmakers who have vowed to take on the head of the Department of Petroleum Resources in Owerri should he fail to explain to the House why petrol should continue to sell high above the approved N145 pump price.
Leading debate on a motion brought on the floor of the House by the member for Nkwerre state constituency, Hon. Chika Madumere alleged that it was quite unbelievable that the DPR should watch Imo people continue to be exploited by greedy independent petrol markers even when the Federal Government did not announce any increase in the pump price of petrol.
He noted that they are suspecting that something could have gone wrong somewhere in view of the persisting high price of petrol in Imo State with the independent marketers doing so without qualms, whereas according to him: “DPR has on several occasions and in several cities like Lagos, Port Harcourt, Abuja, etc, swung into action and enforced the sale of petrol at the federal government approved pump price of N145 per litre”.
All the members who spoke on the motion supported it in its entirety prompting the speaker, Rt. Hon. Acho Ihim to set up an adhoc committee led by Madumere to look into the matter and report back to the House immediately.
