John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
The true meaning of Christmas is rooted in the birth of Jesus Christ, the Saviour promised in the scriptures. Isaiah 9:6-7 foretells the coming of a child who will bring peace, justice, and God’s rule: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of his government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on David’s throne and over his kingdom, establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forevermore.”
This promise was fulfilled with Jesus’ humble birth in Bethlehem, a town foretold in Micah 5:2. Luke 2:8-20 recounts the announcement of Jesus’ birth to shepherds by angels, who praised God saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace…” (Luke 2:13-14).
The arrival of the wise men highlights Jesus’ significance. In Matthew 2:1-12, they followed a star to worship Jesus, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, symbolizing His kingship, divinity, and death.
God’s motivation for sending Jesus was pure love (John 3:16), reflecting God’s immense love for humanity (Romans 5:8). Jesus’ birth brought hope to a broken world – hope and peace through Jesus.
Christmas conveys profound implications: a loving God intervenes in human history (John 1:14), offers forgiveness and new life through Jesus (Romans 6:23, 2 Corinthians 5:17), and provides God’s presence and peace (John 14:27, Philippians 4:7).
Christmas is a celebration of giving, mirroring God’s gift of Jesus (2 Corinthians 8:9). Christians are called to emulate this generosity: give to God, give to others, and give generously (Psalm 51:10, Romans 12:1, Proverbs 11:25, 1 John 3:17-18).
Business people and traders should show kindness in their dealings, avoiding price increases, especially for those returning home (Proverbs 11:1, Micah 6:8). Drivers should drive safely (Proverbs 24:11-12), and security agencies should protect the public diligently (Psalm 82:3-4, Romans 13:1-4).
Christmas is a time of community, unity, and joy, reflecting God’s love (Psalm 133:1, Acts 2:46-47). Focus on Jesus: reflect on God’s love, share the good news, worship God, and care for the less privileged (Luke 2:17-18, James 1:27).
Leaders should promote unity, serve the vulnerable, uphold justice, and encourage hope through Jesus (Romans 12:18, Matthew 25:31-46, Proverbs 21:3).
As we celebrate, let’s invite Christ into our lives anew. May we have the heart of Christ and show love to neighbours and one another (Philippians 2:5, John 13:34-35).
Prayer
Heavenly Father, grant us peace, joy, and love as we celebrate Jesus’ birth. Help us reflect Your generosity, care for the needy, and share Your love. Protect travelers, bless leaders, and keep communities safe. May Christ be born in us and through us. Amen.
