In a move to address growing concerns over uncontrolled cattle grazing in Owerri, the Imo State Government has set July 24, 2025, as the final date for ending open grazing in the state capital.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr. Anthony Mgbeahurike, during a meeting with cattle breeders and herders in Owerri. He stressed that the Uzodimma administration is determined to maintain peaceful coexistence among all groups while safeguarding the socio-economic stability of the city.
“The government has provided critical support to herders in the past, including free vaccination of cattle against anthrax “But we can no longer allow unchecked cattle roaming that disrupts daily life and threatens public order in Owerri.”Dr. Mgbeahurike noted.
The Commissioner also underscored the need for mutual respect between herders and farmers.
“Herders must avoid the destruction of farmlands and, in cases of accidental damage, promptly compensate affected farmers,” he said.
In a bid to ensure effective communication and compliance, Dr. Mgbeahurike officially recognized Alhaji Shuaibu as the new leader of cattle herders in the state. He tasked him with the responsibility of informing fellow herders about the government’s new directive and ensuring strict adherence.
Responding, Alhaji Shuaibu expressed gratitude for the government’s past support and apologized for disruptions caused by open grazing.
“We pledge our cooperation with the government and will work hard to comply with this directive “We commend Governor Uzodimma’s inclusive leadership and reaffirm our commitment to peace and hygiene in Imo State.”he assured.
