…As Dep. Controller hails founder, Nwosu
…Urges Imo Gov to visit the facility.
Amidst the current economic challenges which Nigerians are going through at the moment, the founder of Ikukuoma Foundation, a Non Governmental Organization,NGO, Hon Edith Nwosu, on Thursday last week, once again demonstrated her charitable disposition as her Foundation sponsored a free medical outreach for over 200 inmates of the Owerri Correctional Centre( Prisons).
Hon Nwosu whose Foundation is reputed to have touched over 5000 lives around Nigeria in various ways including empowerment and health since 2017, hinted newsmen during the free medical outreach, which held at the Owerri Correctional Centre,(Prisons)that she was moved by the challenges faced by the inmates especially, as it concerns their health conditions.”These persons are the neglected , rejected and abandoned by the leaders,especially those in government.
Nothwithstanding the scope and involvement, the Ikukuoma Foundation chief executive, Hon Nwosu said the foundation remained committed to ensuring that up to 400 inmates were captured in the exercise.
Nwosu explained that the medical outreach for inmates of Owerri Correctional Centre(Prisons )had a hospital setting, with doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory technicians to attend to health needs of the inmates.
” I am spurred by this natural love and passion for assisting and helping the needy. Helping not only makes me happy, but also gives me a sense of satisfaction,” Nwosu disclosed
On why she made a foray into politics, Hon Nwosu who hails from Abba in Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State, revealed that she ran for Nwangele state constituency seat in the Imo House of Assembly during the 2023 general elections due of her desire to use politics as a platform to add more value and do more
for the needy in society, saying that there is a limit she could go using her personal resources in charity work.
She equally added that not winning that election as Labour Party Candidate in 2023, has not in any way affected her humanitarian and charitable work for society.
She beckoned on well meaning individuals to assist the prison inmates. While calling on Governor Hope Uzodinma to pay visits to the facility with a view to findings ways of improving the welfare of the inmates.
The lead doctor in medical team of the foundation, Dr Ijeoma Misheal of Umezurike Hospital Owerri, who led the medical team said she was delighted with what Hon Nwosu has been doing with the foundation, saying that such prompted her to volunteer to assist the good work of the foundation.
She disclosed that some inmates had malaria, skin infections, urinary infections, among others, while available drugs were administered after they had gone through some tests and had their blood pressure checked.
Some inmates who were beneficiaries of the free medical outreach including Chibuzo Peter and Eze Obinna expressed gratitude to Ikukuoma Foundation for the outreach. They also prayed God to bless the efforts of foundation.
Meanwhile an elated Deputy Controller Of Correction Service incharge, Owerri Medium Security Custodian Centre, Elder Udoka Princess Chinaka told newsmen that he was delighted with the medical outreach which he described as laudabe, applaudable and a welcome development. He also said that such gestures as the free medical outreach sponsored by Ikukuoma Foundation, should be encouraged as they compliment the efforts of the government in taking adequate care of the inmates.
He said the Ikukuoma Foundation gesture was worthy of emulation by other well-meaning individuals and organisations as it compliments government’s efforts in the correctional centres.
The deputy Comptroller disclosed that the beneficiaries of the free medical outreach were selected after need assessment of the inmates by the medical unit, and in line with the request of Ikukuoma Foundation.
