In school they told you she was the First Woman to drive a car in LAfrica, she’s more than that… She was a teacher, women’s rights activist, political campaigner and traditional aristocrat. She was the only woman among the men that fought against colonial rule.
She was the only woman in National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) delegation to London in 1947 to negotiate for independence.
She is the mother of Fela Anikulapo Kuti and BecoRansomeKuti. She is also the
grandmother of Femi Kuti and SeunKuti. FunmilayoRansome-Kuti “sacked” the Alake of Egbaland in 1948. He was famously driven into exile in 1948 by the Abeokuta womenfolk. In her words “Alake, for a long time you have used your penis as a mark of authority that you are our husband. Today, we shall reverse the order and use our vaginas to play the role of a husband.” Mrs. FunmilayoRansome-Kuti meets Nigeria’s first and only Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar TafawaBalewa in Lagos, 1959. She died at the age of 77 after being wounded in a military raid on family property.
