Obiefule pleads with traders, mechanics to move to newly built markets in Imo

The member representing Isu State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon Ngozi Obiefule has called for the immediate relocation of traders to the newly built markets by Governor Rochas Okorocha.

Speaking on a motion she brought on the floor of the House during Tuesday plenary, Hon. (Mrs.) Obiefule noted that inspite of the fact that Governor Okorocha has according to her, constructed over 10,00 stores in various parts of Owerri capital territory and beyond, most of these markets have remained unoccupied while in most cases only 10 percent occupied.

The vibrant Isu lawmaker further lamented that the non-occupation of these shops has led to congested city roads and old markets in the state capital which she said, might lead to epidemics.

Obiefule who is also the House Committee Chairman on Commerce and Market Development also regretted that the situation has led to huge losses being suffered by individuals who have invested in these markets under the current public-private-partnership (PPP) arrangement. She equally disclosed that few traders who have complied could hardly sell their wares as customers or buyers prefer to buy from traders “within littered in the urban city”

Hon Obiefule in the motion therefore, urged the House to as a matter of urgency invite the Commissioner for Market Development and the General Manager of Owerri Capital Development Authority, OCDA, for an interface.

House also resolved to invite stakeholders and trade union executives for parley on the issue. House adopted all the prayers of the motion.

Meanwhile, the Isu Lawmaker has expressed satisfaction at the facilities provided for mechanics at the new mechanic village built by Governor Okorocha at Avu in Owerri West Local Government Area, and has also urged all mechanics to move to the area.
