“Achonu Is our Guber candidate, not pretenders”
The National Leader of the Labour Party and presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections in Nigeria, Peter Obi has thrown his support behind Senator Athan Achonu as the governorship candidate of the party ahead of the November 11 poll in the state.
Obi who spoke before a mammoth crowd at the Kanu Nwankwo Sports Complex, Owerri on Tuesday, during the flag off ceremony and unveiling of the campaign manifesto of Senator Achonu attended by topnotchers in Labour Party in Nigeria, made it clear that the Ehime Mbano-born business mogul emerged as Labour Party governorship candidate for November 11 gubernatorial election in Imo State through a primary election panel that was set up by the National Chairman of Labour Party, Julius Abure, and headed by Governor Alex Otti of Abia State.
Obi disclosed that it was the Governor Otti-headed Imo State Labour Party governorship primary that produced Senator Achonu as the governorship candidate of the party for the scheduled November 11 gubernatorial poll in Imo.
The former Anambra State governor made it clear that Senator Achonu having emerged from that process, has all the support of the leadership of Labour Party.
Obi expressed confidence in the capacity of Achonu and the Labour Party to win the November 11 governorship election in Imo, insisting that the suffering Nigerian masses were seriously yeaning for change.
Speaking further, the Labour Party presidential candidate reaffirmed his commitment to bring the much-needed change in the country and called on Imo people to use the opportunity provided by the coming governorship election in Imo State well by voting massively for Labour Party.
He noted that Abia State was already reaping the dividends of good governance under the Labour Party government of Governor Otti.
Speaking also, the National Chairman of Labour Party, Julius Abure said Labour Party remained the only viable alternative as according to him, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, have allegedly failed Nigerians.
He iterated his belief in the capacity of Senator Achonu to deliver if voted into office as Imo governor on November 11, adding that the party would continue to stand solidly behind him as the Imo Labour Party governorship candidate.
Abure sued for patience on the part of Imo people assuring that what Governor Otti was doing in Abia State would soon be replicated in Imo.
Abia State governor, Otti disclosed that he presided over the Labour Party primary in Imo and described the process that produced Senator Achonu as Labour Party governorship candidate in Imo State as transparent.
In his own speech, Senator Achonu vowed to end the raging insecurity in Imo State if given the opportunity to govern the state on November 11.
He assured that he would industrialise Imo, build electricity generation plant in less than two years, create massive job opportunities in agriculture and other sectors of the state’s economy, and improve on the healthcare of Imo people by activating the more than 25.health centres he said, were built by him through the federal government including according priority to local government autonomy and rural roads construction, community development, among others.
He maintained that his administration if elected, would leverage the abundant gas in the state to generate electricity that would power the entire state, adding that his road and educational infrastructure would be world class.
Achonu urged Imo citizens to continue voting for Labour Party saying that the other two political parties had failed the people.
The deputy governorship candidate of Labour Party in Imo, Hon Tony Nwulu assured Imo people that Senator Achonu and the Labour Party would end insecurity in the state if voted into office on November 11.
He hinted that Labour Party administration in Abia State under Governor Otti was already breaking records in a short period since it came on board.
The Director General of Athan Achonu Campaign Organization, Engr Chimee Nzeribe said the event has proved to detractors that Achonu remained one and only Labour Party governorship candidate in Imo State.
The highlight of the event include the official hand over of the Labour Party flag to Senator Achonu as the governorship candidate of the party as well as a minute silence observed in honour of all those who lost their lives to insecurity in Imo State.
