Importance Of Peace To Person And Nation

By  Chuks Osuji

It has been established that the greatest possession of a man or a nation is peace. It has also been confirmed by statements by some great world leaders that peace and tranquility are two important components of national pleasure, comfort and happiness. For example, it has been said by Winston Churchill, Second World War prime minister of England that,”It is better that we jaw-jaw instead of War-war.”

The importance of peace as a universal componanet of tranquility in development cannot be overstressed. It has been said that Nigeria as a nation is a nation of religion. That is to say that the people of Nigeria attend mosques on Friday and go to church services every Sunday. For example, it is evident that no country in Africa has more Moslems and Christians than Nigeria. By the same token, the celebration of Christmas and Easter has become a matter of national festivity. Similarly, the celebration of Idi Fitri which are Islamic festivals also take national dimension.

On daily basis, particularly on Wednesdays, fridays and Sunday’s, millions of Christians and Moslems attend church services or Moslems attend mosques. Honestly, the principal objective was of such religious gathering is to pray for peace not only in our nation but beginning with individual households.

Therefore, as our country is facing a perilous time, we concentrate on daily prayers for peace, peace, peace and peace in

Therefore I State below great statements by some world’s Statesmen and philosophers like Marcus Tulliu Cicero who postulated that “Peace is liberty in tranquility.”

another Philosopher, Wayne Dyewr said, “Peace can become a lens through which you see the world. Be it. Live it. Radiate it out. Peace is an inside job.” Another by Lao Tzu says, “If you are depressed you are living in the past if you are anxious you are living in the future, if you are at peace, you are living in the present.”  Also, Baba Hari Das said, “Don’t search for anything except peace. Try to calm the mind. Everything else will come on its own.” Furthermore, Mother Theresa went ahead to say, “Peace begins with a smile.” Another philosopher Eleanor Roosevelt also opined that, “It isn’t enough to talk about peace. One must believe in it. And it isn’t enough to believe in it. One must work at it.”  J. Donald Walters is of the view that, “You will find peace not by trying to escape your problems, but by confronting them courageously. You will find peace not in denial, but in victory.” “It is better that we jaw-jaw than to war-war.” By winston Churchill. “The internal tranquility of a nation must be predicted on justice, equity and communal love by Arnold Smith. “Those who struggle for peace are the real patriots of a nation and those who spore for war must be seen as destroyers of a nation’s assets.” by Samuel Huntington

Can the above be of strong lesson and instructive to us all?

Country men and women, do I need to say more?.
