The Rivers State Neighborhood Watch Safety Corps Agency, has solicited for the support of journalists practicing in the state in it’s bid to tackle crime and insecurity through intelligence-gathering.
To this end, the management of the agency yesterday paid a visited to the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) as well as the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ in Port Harcourt.
Speaking during the visit to the Correspondents’ Chapel, director-general of the agency, Dr. Uche Mike Chukwuma, urged journalists to key into any security programme or project aimed at promoting peace in the state.
Chukwuma, who is a retired Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), stated that the operatives of the agency were involved in undercover security of the state. and craved partnership with both Journalists and the civil society.
He said: “Try your best to deploy intelligence. Know it before it happens and prevent it before it happens. Neighbourhood Watch us an agency I am serving with a degree of humanity.
“We are into intelligence-gathering and distributing with other security agencies who are constitutionally empowered to carry arms. So that they can go in and stop any crime from taking place. We are undercover security of the state. Our operations are covert operations.”
In his remarks, Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ in the state, Amaechi Okonkwo assured the agency of the corporation of journalists in the cause of carrying out their duties.
