Tragedy: Airforce man shoots, kills corper in Imo “The soldier slapped the deceased Corper”

Tragedy struck in Awaka, near Owerri the Imo State Capital weekend when an Airforce man in a military checkpoint in the community shot and killed one Emeka Amadi from Umunkwe, Nde Egbelu, Awaka, Owerri North LGA.
The young man, who was a Youth Corp member was said to be doing his one year mandatory national youth service in Plateau State, North Central Nigeria, according sources was killed by the Airforce man allegedly because of communal crisis.
Nigeria Newspoint gathered that trouble started after another village went to the military men at the checkpoint in the community to lodge a complaint against the deceased.
The military men were said to have intervened in the matter during which one of them slapped the deceased leading to a scuffle and subsequent shooting and killing of the young man.
Eyewitnesses disclosed that the killing of the Corper drew the ire of the youths of the community who attacked the military personnel and barricaded the Owerri  Umuahia expressway causing heavy traffic gridlock.
An indigene of Awaka who spoke under condition of anonymity disclosed that the military men at the checkpoint have for long been a nightmare to both residents of the community and road users on the Umuahia Owerri Road, particularly commercial drivers.
According him, there was no type of evil that they (military men) at the checkpoint never perpetrated including extortion at gunpoint, raping of women and intimidation and humiliation of road users on daily basis.
He expressed shock that those who were paid with tax payers’ money to provide security of life and property were now using the opportunity to extort, rape, maim and kill those they are supposed to protect.
When contacted the Police Public Relations Officer, Imo Police Command, ASP Andrew Enwerem said the police immediately dashed to the scene when it got report of the killing around 11.30am on Saturday.
He added that the police officers sent to the scene were able to recover the AK 47  seized by the angry mob from the Airforce personnel and eventually succeeded in restoring normalcy in the community.
