Buhari opposes Oyegun’s tenure extension

President Muhammadu Buhari at the Tuesday National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the All Progressive Congress called for a reversal of the tenure elongation decision of the party for its executives from the national to the ward levels.
Buhari, who referred to the decision of the NEC of APC which met on February 27, 2018 and okayed tenure extension for the national chairman, John Oyegun and all excos down to the ward level, said the decision could spell doom for the party in view of Article 17(1) and 13, 2(B) of APC constitution and Section 223 of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria (as amended), which according to him prescribe “periodic elections for party executives at regular intervals, which must not exceed four years”.
Speaking further, Buhari disclosed: “Article 31 of APC constitution provides for any principal officer wishing to re-contest or contest for another post, must resign from his current post at least one month before the election”.
“In this circumstance, what is expected of is to conduct fresh election, once the tenure of the current executives approaches its end. A caretaker committee cannot remedy this situation, and cannot vividly act in place of elected officers”.
PMB called for strict adherence to the party and country’s constitution rather than put APC and its activities at grave risk.
