Owerri North NUT Chairman puts smiles on faces of retirees

On the 28th day of November 2018, Comrade Kennedy Opara the NUT North Branch Chairman celebrated his one year in office in grand style, he elected into office on 4th December 2017 in a keenly contested election which he won with large margin of votes over other contestants.

On assumption of office he maintained an open door policy which endeared him to all teachers in the Local Government including the Association of Secondary School Principals in Owerri North (ANCOPPS) and Association of Headmasters/Headmistresses in the Local Government.

 

He established a welfare scheme for serving and retired teachers to help in cushioning the effect of the economic crunch, every serving member of the Union in the Local Government pays two hundred naira monthly, this noble initiative was applauded by all.

Comrade Opara gathered teachers, principals, and headmasters/ headmistresses from secondary and primary schools together at Chief Obi Memorial Primary School Emekuku to celebrate, in an emotion laden voice he gave a brier account of his stewardship for the past one year and asked for their support to continue to pilot the affairs of NUT in Owerri North. He gave the retired teachers that graced the occasion in their numbers twenty thousand naira each from the welfare scheme he introduced on assumption of office, first of its kind in the Local Government.

The retired teachers were excited and thanked the NUT Branch Chairman for his vision and excellent leadership qualities. They asked God to bless and guide him. Comrade Opara thanked them for appreciating him and said though he has been giving twenty thousand naira to deceased families and the school where a member was teaching in the event of death, adding that he has decided to celebrate them now they are alive.
