2019: Diaspora Group Advocates Internal Democracy In Imo APC Primaries

Worried by the recent purported endorsement of the Chief Of Staff and son-in-law of the governor of Imo state,Owelle Rochas Okorocha,Ugwumba Uche Nwosu,as successor of the governor in 2019,a diaspora group based in the USA,the Diaspora Owerri Zone-2019,has called on the leadership of the ruling party,All Progressive Congress,APC in the state to allow internal democracy take its full course in the awaited Governorship Primary election by the party.

Speaking with Newsmem in an interactive session on telephone, the group, while reacting to media reports on the adoption of Uche Nwosu as successor to the seat of governor after Gov.Okorocha’s exit from office in 2019 said that, such character by the governor negates the charter of equity,as well as,demeans democratic principles and values that stipulate internal democracy and fairplay.

Also urging the APC in Imo state to imbibe by the rule of internal democracy in to checkmate unhealthy imposition candidates on the party framework, the Diaspora Owerri Zone-2019,maintained that, for the party to sustain followership and overall acceptability by Imo people beyond 2019,the leadership should do away with imposition of candidates, who may not be acceptable by the people.

The group under the chairmanship of chief Richmond Okoro, however, appealed to indigenes of the 9 Local Government Areas in Owerri zone never to relent in their collective struggle in ensuring Owerri indigene becomes governor of the state,come,2019.This,group advised, can only be achieved if Owerri zone indigenes secure their Permanent Voters’Cards(PVCs).

It would be recalled that similar interest groups like the Diaspora Owerri Zone-2019 played vital roles in ensuring that, indigenes of states’ capital cities such as former Edo state governor,Lucky Igbiniedon(Benin-born),and the governor of Delta state,Ifeanyi Okowa(Asaba province) to govern their states in modern democracy.
